History of computer games

Although the first ever computer game was made in 1958, computer games were not really introduced as a commercial entertainment industry until the late 1970s/early 1980s.  In 1983 the computer game industry collapsed but two years later it started to pick up again after having a rebirth.  The computer game industry experienced substantial growth over the past two decades to become a $10 billion industry, which gives the motion picture industry a run for their money.  The computer games industry is actually the rival of the motion picture industry as the most profitable industry in the world and you can see why.  There is such a large range of computer games all over the world, games that are from the past and the present.  Games are now available for every type of person from young toddlers, to students, school children and adults of all ages.  I recently took my son to get a new game for his xbox and we were in the shop for over an hour and a half, trying to decide on a game for him to buy, there is just so much choice. Now I know where I went wrong when I left school!

The History of computer games

The history of computer games as far as I have found go back to 1958.  Types of games such as combat games, simulation  games or games such as dungeons and dragons were early 60ies inventions but are still alive and being played today.  It amazes me when I look back at the earlist computer games at how basic the images were  compared to the games that are around today.  It just goes to show just how far we have come in the technological progress in the last 4 decades. The first ever game was called ‘tennis for two’ and it was invented by a gentleman named William A. Higinbotham who was a self claimed chain smoker with a fun loving character.  It is thought that William A. Higinbotham was the owner of 20 patents concerning electronic circuits.  William A. Higinbotham died on the 10th November 1995.

The History of Computer Games

My name is Lynsey and I am going to be writing about the history of computer games (hence the title).  I’m not an expert in any shape or form when it comes to computer games or computer consoles but I do have a ten year old son who thinks he is!  I’m not a complete novice though and I have to admit that I do enjoy sneaking on my sons games console when he is not on it.  My son has just had an xbox 360 arcade for christmas and it came with games included with it.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that a couple of the games were games that I used to play in my childhood such as Pac-man, Frog and feeding frenzy.  My son was surprised that I knew how to play the games and also that I was actually quite good at them.  I am interested in when the computer games actually came into use, what games they were and how they have changed over the years.
